Preface: Looking for another book of <Bu Tian Song>
The earliest study of astrology book in China is called <Bu Tian Song>. It contains graceful seven-character verses and delicate paintings to show the bright starry sky. This document was introduced into Korea in the tenth century, which has became very important and one of the oldest version, Chinese scholars transcribed and brought it back in modern time. This is not an exception when the lost Chinese ancient texts were found back from South Korea back again.
Last summer, I met Korean students Yinghao Shen’ in Beijing after a year of separation. He proposed that the Yunnan art academy I taught in and Kyungpook National University he taught in should have an exchange. Through joint efforts from both sides, two schools achieved an intercollegiate cooperation agreement, Teachers from Yunnan Art Academy would visit Korea in May this year and then Teachers from Kyungpook National University would visit Kunming in June. During the period of visiting Korea, the way their teachers and students followed etiquettes has touched everyone who is from the hometown of Confucius. When they greeted us, everyone bowed down; at formal appointment, all levels of staffs of the relevant departments must be present; they always prepare exquisite tea sets and tea; the host’s kind greeting would reach each one of us. Moreover, the well designed space and Professional and dedicated arrangement of the exhibition in Kyungpook’s Art Gallery and the Daegu City Art Gallery, has impressed us greatly.
Seven professors of theirs didn’t talk much, but they treated people sincerely, I think they are the type just cold on the appearance. Their arts have the same characteristics. Most works were built upon comprehensive use of hand-painting, air brushing, computer synthesis, new media such as images and ready-made art, color is mainly pure black and white, simple geometric structure, have a certain taste of design in them, attention to do metaphysical thinking on objects, is the combination of Oriental Zen aesthetics and western minimalist art. In this globalizing society, visual art that adopted new technology has more contemporary characteristics and stronger visual impact. But this is only the interpretation of surface, in fact they are using international new art media to search for its national ethnic characteristics, and analyze the differences between their traditional culture and other countries.
Seven teachers from Yunnan Art Academy although are outgoing, funny and humorous, most of their works are heavy and the theme are focus on reality. They have direct satire to today’s environmental deterioration, humorous ways of thinking about eastern and western cultural conflict, inner anxiety about current living condition, and persistent exploration of turning traditional painting to more modern and contemporary styles. It is interesting to note that regardless the theme is complex social phenomena; the main roles in their works are animals, houses and the wilderness. This kind of surreal and symbolic techniques led viewers to wider imagination. On the choice of artistic media, the main technique is hand-painting, together with both photography and computer generating skills. Emphasizing on hand-painting skill is the common feature in several artists, and also is admired by Korean teachers and students.
For teachers from Yunnan Art Academy, this short visit and exchange, not only was a dialogue of art works, but also a live class of respecting and believing in traditional values, rituals, etiquettes and righteousness, such as paying attention to the practical applications of the traditional culture and aesthetics in the contemporary society. These may just be the another book of < Bu Tian song > that we were looking for.
