Preface

Is Songzhuang the paradise? Or the Animal Farm? Or a receding utopia? Now a new CAD has been added here – the central art district.

Anyhow, Songzhuang has become a big topic, and even interfere with the trend of Chinese contemporary art.

After <Shisan Bu Kao art exhibition>, cooperation with DUFFY cigar gallery in Yunnan Last year, I discussed several times with Mr Jiefu Wang regarding Songzhuang’s way of life and art production relationships, we agreed to hold a painting exhibition, film a documentary and publish a book, in an attempt to ask for the past and the future of Songzhuang.

Young curator Ms Honghua Zang and art director Mr Yanguo Xia have locked their eyes on the young artists of the 70 s and 80 s. They worked together with Ms Xiaozhen Chen from DUFFY cigar gallery and successfully made a progress of the plan.

As a academic support, the only advice I gave them was: if it is not clear to you what to ask for, then you’d better make sure what you don’t want.

Now this work, presenting in front of the viewers, is a result that ended the cognitive pattern of styling history, and ruled out the logo of “made in Songzhuang”. I indeed can’t say much about these young artists’ hat of XXism. Each of them only on behalf of their own, only want to express themselves, and they no longer keen on collectivism. They avoided productions that are too symbolic. I believe that this also comes from their inner questioning on previous successful apotheosis of the Songzhuang model.

I firmly believe there are talents every generation. The younger generations, in the face of strong conspire from capitalization, power and media, of the temptation of all kinds of commercial games, will eventually make their own judgment and choice.

Modern art in China has been through thirty years, changes are dramatic. I hope the young generation can persist in personality independence, freedom of spirit and stick to their own way of living.

Even though Yunnan province is located in the edge of China, but it has always been one of the birthplaces of contemporary art. Since the 1980 s, there have been art groups and individuals started from there, enter the central part of art and brought influences internationally. The exhibition emphasized on the interaction and communication between artists from two places, one of the most important issues was life-style.

What kind of life-style is the choice for artists, can free spirit of contemporary art continues, can it be effective against the mediocrity and boringness of materialism? Looking forward to the young generation of artists to give us some surprise.

The exhibition is an inter-school cooperation projects between Yunnan art Academy and fine arts discipline of Kyungpook University. 14 artists went to participate in the exhibition and visited each place, used diverse ways for art communication.

Preface: Looking for another book of <Bu Tian Song>

The earliest study of astrology book in China is called <Bu Tian Song>. It contains graceful seven-character verses and delicate paintings to show the bright starry sky. This document was introduced into Korea in the tenth century, which has became very important and one of the oldest version, Chinese scholars transcribed and brought it back in modern time. This is not an exception when the lost Chinese ancient texts were found back from South Korea back again.

Last summer, I met Korean students Yinghao Shen’ in Beijing after a year of separation. He proposed that the Yunnan art academy I taught in and Kyungpook National University he taught in should have an exchange. Through joint efforts from both sides, two schools achieved an intercollegiate cooperation agreement, Teachers from Yunnan Art Academy would visit Korea in May this year and then Teachers from Kyungpook National University would visit Kunming in June. During the period of visiting Korea, the way their teachers and students followed etiquettes has touched everyone who is from the hometown of Confucius. When they greeted us, everyone bowed down; at formal appointment, all levels of staffs of the relevant departments must be present; they always prepare exquisite tea sets and tea; the host’s kind greeting would reach each one of us. Moreover, the well designed space and Professional and dedicated arrangement of the exhibition in Kyungpook’s Art Gallery and the Daegu City Art Gallery, has impressed us greatly.

Seven professors of theirs didn’t talk much, but they treated people sincerely, I think they are the type just cold on the appearance. Their arts have the same characteristics. Most works were built upon comprehensive use of hand-painting, air brushing, computer synthesis, new media such as images and ready-made art, color is mainly pure black and white, simple geometric structure, have a certain taste of design in them, attention to do metaphysical thinking on objects, is the combination of Oriental Zen aesthetics and western minimalist art. In this globalizing society, visual art that adopted new technology has more contemporary characteristics and stronger visual impact. But this is only the interpretation of surface, in fact they are using international new art media to search for its national ethnic characteristics, and analyze the differences between their traditional culture and other countries.

Seven teachers from Yunnan Art Academy although are outgoing, funny and humorous, most of their works are heavy and the theme are focus on reality. They have direct satire to today’s environmental deterioration, humorous ways of thinking about eastern and western cultural conflict, inner anxiety about current living condition, and persistent exploration of turning traditional painting to more modern and contemporary styles. It is interesting to note that regardless the theme is complex social phenomena; the main roles in their works are animals, houses and the wilderness. This kind of surreal and symbolic techniques led viewers to wider imagination. On the choice of artistic media, the main technique is hand-painting, together with both photography and computer generating skills. Emphasizing on hand-painting skill is the common feature in several artists, and also is admired by Korean teachers and students.

For teachers from Yunnan Art Academy, this short visit and exchange, not only was a dialogue of art works, but also a live class of respecting and believing in traditional values, rituals, etiquettes and righteousness, such as paying attention to the practical applications of the traditional culture and aesthetics in the contemporary society. These may just be the another book of < Bu Tian song > that we were looking for.
